Seniors and exercise

By Dr. Dan Van Roon • August 26th, 2012

Often times senior citizens tell me about water aerobics, water exercise and even water zumba classes that they are partaking in. I always like to question further, because oftentimes they do not know that those activities get better results when performed weight bearing. I usually only recommend to do those previous water activity classes mentioned only when the person can only perform them non-weight bearing. The reason for this is that your bones respond to stress by laying down more bone with weight bearing activities. Many seniors should be concerned about osteoporosis/osteopenia, and the best way to combat this is through weight bearing exercise. So I recommend to only do the before mentioned activities in the pool if you have to because of pain or joint limitations.
