Be sure to get adjusted regularly. Chiropractic care is important to help maintain a healthy skeletal structure and nervous system function throughout a pregnancy and childbirth.
Do some gentle exercise each day. Walking, swimming, or stationary cycling are relatively safe cardiovascular exercises for pregnant women. Avoid any activities that involve jerking or bouncing movements. Stop exercise immediately if you notice any unusual symptom, such as nausea, dizziness or weakness.

Wear flat shoes with arch supports. Your feet become more susceptible to injury during pregnancy, partially due to a rapidly increasing body weight, but also because the ligaments that support the feet become more lax.

When picking up children, bend from the knees, not the waist. Your low back is much more prone to injury during pregnancy.

When sleeping, lay on your side with a pillow between your knees to take pressure off your lower back. Full-length “body pillows” or “pregnancy wedges” are very popular and can be helpful.

Eat several small meals or snacks every few hours, rather than three large meals per day. This will help alleviate nausea, stabilize blood sugar and allow your body to extract the maximum amount of nutrients from the foods that you eat.

Take a prenatal vitamin with at least 400 micrograms of folic acid every day; 800 micrograms is even better. Folic acid has been shown to dramatically reduce the risk of neural tube defects in a developing fetus. Be sure to check with your doctor before taking any vitamin or herbal supplement to make sure it’s safe for you and the baby.

In a recent study published in Spine, the authors conclude that positive sagittal balance (poor posture, where the head and neck deviate forward from normal), was detrimental to their overall health. Furthermore, the farther it deviated from normal, the worse their overall health. Check out the study here.
Unfortunately, i see more and more of this problem. Possibly because we sit at a desk job all day long, then go home and sit in front of a computer. There are probably even many more reasons why. However, good posture is important to your overall health. So it is very important to eat right, live a healthy active lifestyle and at least get your posture checked occasionally!

Check out this article I recently found in Dynamic Chiropractic that states that according to a recent population-based prospective study, soy intake is safe and was linked with lower mortality and recurrence among breast cancer patients. This recent discovery goes against experiments conducted in test tubes that showed soy isoflavones enhance cellular replication, which would enhance cancer cells. The study referred to in this article was on over 5000 breast cancer subjects in China from 2002 to 2009.

Some people that I meet know a little about chiropractic, however, most do not know very much about the chiropractic profession and what it can do. So I thought that i would go over some of the basics. For beginners, chiropractors do not “crack” the bones. The audible noise that you hear from most adjustments is just gas within the joint space. Then the second common misconception is that chiropractors treat neck, back and headache pain only. Although a large portion of my new patients that visit my office first fit in this category, the word doctor means to teach. It is important for patients to realize that the alignment and mobility of the spine is important for your health and well-being and enjoyment of life.
Chiropractic actually works through the nervous system. We restore the alignment and/or mobility to the joints to take away the nerve interference, to allow the body to heal itself naturally. Chiropractors do not prescribe medicine, but may refer to the patients primary care physician if needed. Inherently in most chiropractors philosophy is that pain meds and anti-inflammatories interfere with the bodies natural ability to heal itself.
After a patient gets out of the pain phase of care, the next step is correction. This is when therapeutic exercise is important to help maximize results. Usually corrective care takes longer than the pain phase, but I feel that this is very important for quality of life in the long run. The last goal is to maintain your health and well being. Usually an infrequent chiropractic adjustment, along with regular exercise, stretching and proper diet is important for this phase. These are the simple basics of what happens in our office. I hope that you have found this helpful.
