In a recent study published in Spine, the authors conclude that positive sagittal balance (poor posture, where the head and neck deviate forward from normal), was detrimental to their overall health. Furthermore, the farther it deviated from normal, the worse their overall health. Check out the study here.
Unfortunately, i see more and more of this problem. Possibly because we sit at a desk job all day long, then go home and sit in front of a computer. There are probably even many more reasons why. However, good posture is important to your overall health. So it is very important to eat right, live a healthy active lifestyle and at least get your posture checked occasionally!

Some people that I meet know a little about chiropractic, however, most do not know very much about the chiropractic profession and what it can do. So I thought that i would go over some of the basics. For beginners, chiropractors do not “crack” the bones. The audible noise that you hear from most adjustments is just gas within the joint space. Then the second common misconception is that chiropractors treat neck, back and headache pain only. Although a large portion of my new patients that visit my office first fit in this category, the word doctor means to teach. It is important for patients to realize that the alignment and mobility of the spine is important for your health and well-being and enjoyment of life.
Chiropractic actually works through the nervous system. We restore the alignment and/or mobility to the joints to take away the nerve interference, to allow the body to heal itself naturally. Chiropractors do not prescribe medicine, but may refer to the patients primary care physician if needed. Inherently in most chiropractors philosophy is that pain meds and anti-inflammatories interfere with the bodies natural ability to heal itself.
After a patient gets out of the pain phase of care, the next step is correction. This is when therapeutic exercise is important to help maximize results. Usually corrective care takes longer than the pain phase, but I feel that this is very important for quality of life in the long run. The last goal is to maintain your health and well being. Usually an infrequent chiropractic adjustment, along with regular exercise, stretching and proper diet is important for this phase. These are the simple basics of what happens in our office. I hope that you have found this helpful.

The above is a direct quote from a headline that appeared in of all places, the November 17, 2007 Medical News Today. The article, also picked up by UPI news and several other sources, was reporting on a new study published in the October issue of the scientific journal, The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT).

In this study 2780 patients with mechanical low-back pain referred themselves to 60 doctors of chiropractic and 111 medical doctors. These cases were reviewed for effectiveness of care and for costs. One of the articles noted that back pain care in the United States alone is estimated to reach $48 billion this year, and, at any given time, 80 percent of the U.S. population suffers from back pain.

The results of the study showed several interesting facts. With regards to the outcomes, the study showed that both the acute and chronic patients showed better outcomes in pain and disability reduction and higher satisfaction with their care after undergoing chiropractic care, as compared to medical care.

The costs of the care for the medical and chiropractic showed different results depending on the usage. Without adding the costs of any over-the-counter drugs, hospitalization, or surgical costs, when you simply compared the costs of in-office chiropractic to in-office medical care, the chiropractic care was slightly more expensive. If you then add in the additional costs for any referrals made by the chiropractor or the medical doctor, the chiropractic care costs for chronic patients were then 16 percent lower than medical care costs.

The authors of the study, noting that the satisfaction for the chiropractic care was higher, and the overall total costs were lower, made a concluding statement urging more chiropractic utilization in the health care system. They stated, “With their mission to increase value and respond to patient preferences, health care organizations and policy makers need to reevaluate the appropriateness of chiropractic as a treatment option for low-back pain.”

The Annals of Internal Medicine published the results of a survey of 232 people who had arthritis and were under a rheumatologists care. Of those 63% responded to the survey by saying they were using some form of “complementary care” as named by the study. Of those people 31% were using chiropractic. These numbers may themselves be grossly under reported as only 45% of the patients told their doctor about using the other forms of care. These reported numbers translate to over 19% of the public who is seeing a rheumatologist is also seeing a chiropractor.

Possibly the most impressive statistic was that 73% of those trying chiropractic found it helpful. The reasons given why people said they tried the non-medical care was to control pain, because they heard it helps, because it is safe, because it helped someone they know, and because their prescription medication wasn’t working.

The March Medical News Today reported on a study that shows that chiropractic helps body physiology and DNA repair. The study, published in the February scientific periodical, the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, (JVSR), was a collaboration between chiropractors and researchers at the University of Lund in Sweden. In this study researchers found that chiropractic care could influence basic physiological processes affecting oxidative stress and DNA repair.

The article noted that serum thiols are primary antioxidants. Higher antioxidant levels can serve as a way of measuring human health status and DNA repair enzyme activity, which has been shown to correlate with lifespan and aging. In this study researchers measured serum thiol levels in 21 patients, some of these with a variety of health issues or pain, who had undergone short-term chiropractic care. Researchers also evaluated a group of 25 asymptomatic patients who had undergone long-term chiropractic care. These results were then compared to a control group of 30 people who had not received any chiropractic care.

The study results showed that, as the researchers expected, patients who were in pain had the lowest antioxidant levels. However, those patients who were under longer term chiropractic care had statistically significant higher antioxidant levels than both the short term patients with pain, as well as those without pain who did not receive chiropractic care.

One of the authors explained, “Going through life, we experience physical, chemical, and emotional stress. These stresses affect the function of the nervous system. We hypothesized that these disturbances in nerve function could affect oxidative stress and DNA repair on a cellular level.” Kent continued, “Oxidative stress, metabolically generating free radicals, is now a broadly accepted theory of how we age and develop disease.”
